RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
