The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on October 16 as his third album his work was named the best record of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part small stages played in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it weren't for all the gigs I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to support thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The money supported venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that revenue from performances in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they needed better apparatus," the artist shared with the media.

Two years ago, they donated their prize money to the youth organization that developed their band, alongside other local music groups.

And winners that year the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was diagnosed the condition.

"Winning was ample," stated artist Small. "The money was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected two small stages in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The first in that area and the other in that location were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
